ATHENS, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Nikitas Kaklamanis, a senior lawmaker from Greece's ruling New Democracy (ND) party, was elected speaker of parliament on Wednesday, securing 247 votes in the 300-member plenary.

Kaklamanis succeeds Constantine Tassoulas, who resigned last week following the announcement of his nomination as ND's candidate for the country's presidency. Parliament is set to vote on the presidential nomination on Jan. 25.

"The Parliament is a 'mirror' reflecting the image of voters and, at the same time, should set an example of action and morality for the people," he said while addressing the parliament.

Kaklamanis has served as deputy parliament speaker since 2015. First elected a member of parliament 35 years ago, he has also served as member of the European Parliament and mayor of Athens.
