VALLETTA, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Customs officers at the Malta Freeport Terminal intercepted around 250 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a container that was destined for Greece, the department said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Malta Customs said its officers had effectively used profiling to put the spotlight on a container which originated from the port of Guayaquil in Ecuador and was destined for the port of Piraeus in Greece.

Further inspections and scanning revealed the presence of illegal substances.

The Police Drug Squad were immediately called in to assist with the inspections, resulting in 250 kilograms of cocaine being found in the front row.

This was the first haul of 2025. 2024 was a rather busy one for Malta Customs, with 2,148 kilograms of cocaine and 4,774 kilograms of cannabis resin and cannabinoids seized.
