BERLIN, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- A sixth victim has died from injuries sustained in the car-ramming attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg in late December, local authorities said on Monday.

The 52-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital, according to the public prosecutor's office in Naumburg, Saxony-Anhalt, where Magdeburg is the capital.

The attack occurred on Dec. 20, when a 50-year-old man drove a car into crowds at the market. The incident has so far claimed the lives of a 9-year-old boy and five women aged between 45 and 75. At least 299 people were injured.

The suspect, a doctor originally from Saudi Arabia, remains in custody. According to the German news agency dpa, he had been involved in seven prior police investigations between April 2023 and October 2024.

Investigations into the attack are ongoing. Authorities are assessing the suspect's mental state, and the Naumburg Public Prosecutor's Office said an expert evaluation will be commissioned to determine his mental health and level of culpability.
