VIENNA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Austria's inflation rate stood at 1.8 percent in October, remaining below the 2-percent medium-term inflation target set by the European Central Bank (ECB) for the second consecutive month, Statistics Austria said on Tuesday.

The annual inflation rate in October is on par with the 1.8 percent rate in September, which marked the lowest level since February 2021.

Tobias Thomas, director-general of Statistics Austria, said in a statement that cheaper fuel prices have continued to play a major role in dampening inflation.

However, Thomas noted that food prices increased faster than general inflation in October, with prices in restaurants up 5.8 percent from the same month last year.

High inflation has plagued Austria over the past few years, with the country's inflation rate ranking among the highest in the eurozone.
