PRAGUE, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Czech police on Wednesday arrested a man who threatened to carry out a shooting at a university in the northeast of the country.

The University of Ostrava said it had received a warning from police before noon about the potential danger of a shooting at its faculty of arts.

"For preventive reasons, we proceeded to the immediate evacuation and closure of the university buildings in the center of Ostrava. Before 1 p.m., we received information from the police the suspect had been detained," the university said.

The police have confirmed the arrest, although the man's identity remains unknown.

The Czech News Agency reported that a former student at the university was behind the anonymous threat.

Last December, a student shot and killed 14 people at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. A further 25 people were wounded in the tragic incident.

Schools in the Czech Republic have been receiving emails since last week threatening to cause explosions or place booby-traps on their premises. Over 2,500 schools nationwide received a threatening email on Tuesday, police said. However, they added that the severity of the threat remains very low.
