KABUL, April 1 (Xinhua) -- The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) has signed a cooperation memorandum of understanding with Islamic Relief Worldwide to provide cash assistance to households affected by last year's devastating earthquake, the authority said late Tuesday.

Under the agreement, financial aid valued at 789,556 U.S. dollars will be provided to 309 vulnerable and affected families in Bastala and Watala villages of Chapa Dara district in eastern Kunar province. The assistance is intended to support shelter provision and repairs for households still recovering from the disaster, said the authority.

The powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest to strike Afghanistan in recent history, hit parts of eastern Afghanistan, particularly Kunar, in August last year. The quake and its aftershocks left more than 2,200 people dead and over 3,600 others injured, according to official figures.
