PHNOM PENH, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), on Wednesday launched a River Clean-up Campaign, aiming at promoting sustainable river tourism and plastic waste reduction across the kingdom's waterways.
Minister of Tourism Huot Hak said the government has recognized tourism as the kingdom's key driver of sustainable economic growth, job creation, and national development.
He noted that river tourism faces urgent threats, including plastic pollution, limited waste management infrastructure on tour boats, and persistent littering habits, adding that addressing these challenges is essential to protect Cambodia's rivers and ensure sustainable tourism.
Through this campaign, the minister called on all stakeholders to embrace the 4Rs approach (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and work together to advance plastic reduction in the hospitality sector and ensure rivers remain clean, healthy, and attractive for generations to come. ■
