SYDNEY, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A person has died and five others have been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a collision between two vehicles in the Australian Outback on Monday night.
Police in the state of Western Australia (WA) said on Tuesday that the two vehicles collided on a highway near the remote town of Kununurra, over 2,000 km northeast of the state capital of Perth, around 6:15 p.m. local time on Monday.
A 49-year-old male passenger in one of the vehicles died at the scene.
Two other occupants of the same vehicle, a 36-year-old male driver and a 27-year-old female passenger, were airlifted around 450 km to a hospital in the city of Darwin with critical injuries.
The 30-year-old female driver of the other vehicle was flown to a hospital in Perth with serious injuries and two children who were travelling in the same car suffered critical injuries and were also airlifted to Perth.
The highway where the collision occurred remained closed on Tuesday as police investigated the circumstances surrounding the incident. ■
