KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two children were killed as an explosive device left over from past wars went off in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province on Monday, provincial police spokesman Asadullah Jamshid said Tuesday.
The deadly incident took place in the mountain area of Spin Boldak district where two children were taking care of their goats when they found a toy-like object and began playing with it, but the device exploded killing both the children on the spot, the official added.
This is the second kind of such case since the weekend in Afghanistan. In the previous incident, one child lost his life and five others sustained injuries after a mine left over from past wars went off in Zazai Aryub district of the eastern Paktia province on Sunday.
The war-torn Afghanistan reportedly is one of the most landmine-contaminated countries in the world with dozens of people, mostly children, being killed or maimed every month due to the blasts of explosive devices left over from over four decades of war and civil unrest. ■
