TOKYO, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- A scaffolding collapse during bridge construction on the Chugoku Expressway in Japan's Hiroshima Prefecture caused five workers to fall, leaving one man dead and another in critical condition, local media reported Monday.
The incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. local time at a bridge construction site on the expressway's outbound lane, where scaffolding was being erected for foundation work, national broadcaster NHK reported.
Three others sustained injuries and were hospitalized.
Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause of the accident and the detailed circumstances surrounding the collapse. ■
