PHNOM PENH, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Another newborn Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin has been spotted, bringing the number of newborn dolphins in Cambodia to two so far this year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in a news release on Saturday.
The new calf was spotted on Friday at a dolphin pool in northeast Stung Treng province's Siem Bouk district by a research team of the Fisheries Administration and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
"This newborn dolphin was seen swimming alongside a pod of eight other adult dolphins," the news release said. "It is the second baby dolphin born in 2025."
The first one was discovered at the same pool on Thursday.
According to the news release, last year, the Southeast Asian country recorded a total of nine newborn dolphin calves, with four deaths.
The Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins have been listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species since 2004.
The news release said it is estimated that there are 105 Irrawaddy dolphin populations living along a 180-km main channel of the Mekong River in northeast Stung Treng and Kratie provinces. ■
