ALMATY, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) reached a historic investment milestone in Central Asia, committing 2.26 billion euros (about 2.35 billion U.S. dollars) to 121 projects across six countries in 2024 -- nearly double the amount invested in 2023.

The funding was bolstered by 784 million euros (816 million U.S. dollars) in co-financing, pushing total investments in the region above 3 billion euros (3.12 billion U.S. dollars).

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan were the top beneficiaries, receiving 938 million euros (975 million U.S. dollars) and 913 million euros (950 million U.S. dollars), respectively, making them the fifth and sixth largest global recipients of EBRD funds in 2024. Other countries, including Mongolia, Tajikistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, also saw significant investments.

A major focus of the EBRD's funding went toward sustainable infrastructure and green economy initiatives, with 61 percent of the investment dedicated to infrastructure projects. Notably, 58 percent of the total funding aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement, supporting eco-friendly projects.

With a long-term commitment to fostering sustainable development, the EBRD has invested 21.5 billion euros (22.36 billion U.S. dollars) in over 1,160 projects across Central Asia since its operations began in the region 30 years ago.
