COLOMBO, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's central bank has launched a digital payments promotion campaign which is aimed at accelerating the adoption of digital payments across the country, a statement from it said on Thursday.

The campaign themed "shaping the future through digital transactions" was launched by Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe earlier this month at the Magam Ruhunupura administrative complex in Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka, according to the statement.

The governor emphasized the critical role of modern technology and digital payments in driving the economic development of the country and uplifting the quality of life of the citizens, the statement said.

He highlighted the importance of popularizing digital payments among all, with the involvement of government institutions, businesses and financial institutions, according to the statement.

This awareness campaign is the first in a series of initiatives by the central bank, aligning with the broader strategy of the government and central bank to promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth through digitalization, the statement said.
