DHAKA, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- People in old part of the Bangladesh capital Dhaka have celebrated Sakrain festival, also known as Ghuri Utsob or Kite festival.

The festival is celebrated every year at the end of Poush, the ninth month of the Bengali calendar (Jan. 14 or 15 in Gregorian calendar).

On Tuesday, the festival transformed old Dhaka's skies into a glittery kaleidoscope of hundreds of thousands of kites.

The annual event as always featured fireworks and fire-breathing performances.

In parts of Bangladesh, the festival was also observed to mark the beginning of the harvest season.

Eating winter cakes known as "Pitha" made with new winter rice, and flying kites on the occasion are an age-old tradition.
