KABUL, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security forces have discovered a vast quantity of arms and ammunition in eastern Kunar and Nuristan provinces, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement late Thursday.
The weaponry, which includes 49 Kalashnikovs, four rocket-launchers, 29 rocket-propelled grenades, 66 hand grenades, a large quantity of cartridges and bullets, and other illegally preserved military equipment have been seized during a series of operations in different districts of the said provinces, the statement added.
The statement offered no further information regarding the timing of the seizure of the confiscated weapons and ammunition, nor did it confirm whether any arrests had been made in connection with the case.
The Afghan caretaker government has rounded up thousands of arms and a huge quantity of ammunition as part of efforts to stabilize the security situation across the war-ravaged Central Asian country. ■
