NEW DELHI, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Strict police arrangements were made in almost all the major cities in India in a bid to check the New Year revelers' behavior on the roads after partying in hotels, pubs, and bars on Tuesday night.

Such police measures were taken as incidents of drunken driving involving road accidents, particularly on the New Year eves, had been quite frequent in the country, mainly in major cities and towns.

The Delhi Police said in a statement that it had made extensive security arrangements, including deploying ambulances, fire tenders, jail vans, bomb disposal teams, and various patrol units.

"Special teams will monitor public safety, and medical checks will be conducted for those suspected of drink-driving," said a senior police officer in central Delhi, even as huge crowds were expected at various entertainment hubs.

In the country's financial capital, Mumbai, strict police actions were also deployed to avoid any untoward incident. In an advisory, the Mumbai Police said that 15,000 police personnel would be deployed in multiple locations in the city to ensure a smooth passage of traffic.

In Bengaluru, the capital city of southern state Karnataka, around 11,000 police personnel were deployed ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations, said the local police.
