COLOMBO, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan navy on Thursday arrested six suspects from a local multi-day fishing trawler for smuggling narcotics, the navy said in a statement.
A special operation mounted by the navy on the high seas west of Sri Lanka led to the interception of a local multi-day fishing trawler. It was suspected that the trawler was carrying about 60 kg of narcotics.
The navy said the boat and suspects were being escorted back to shore for further investigation and legal action.
Each year, the Sri Lankan navy intercepts large amounts of drugs and contraband off the country's coasts.
Between Jan. 1 and Sept. 8 this year, the navy had seized drugs valued at over 15 billion rupees (51.3 million U.S. dollars), the navy said in an earlier statement. ■
