COLOMBO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Approximately 9,500 cybercrime cases were reported in Sri Lanka in the first 10 months of this year, with about 1,600 incidents related to Internet scams, said the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) on Monday.

Senior engineer of the SLCERT Charuka Damunupola told the media that over 2,000 cases of cyberbullying have been reported so far this year in the South Asian country.

Internet scams have been on the rise in Sri Lanka, and Damunupola stressed that the public needs greater awareness of the tactics used by cyber criminals.

The growing number of cybercrime cases highlights the urgent need for stronger protection for online users, especially children and other vulnerable groups.

The SLCERT under the Ministry of Technology is tasked with safeguarding the cybersecurity in Sri Lanka.
