JAKARTA, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is seeking foreign investors to support its ambitious plan of building 15 million homes over the next five years, or 3 million houses per year, said Hashim Djojohadikusumo, head of the housing task force and president-elect Prabowo Subianto's top adviser, on Thursday.

This is one of the primary initiatives announced by Prabowo and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka during the 2024 presidential campaign.

"Foreign investors would be allocated 1 million residences, with the remaining 2 million properties designated for domestic investors," Hashim stated.

Every year, the plan includes the construction of 1 million apartments in urban areas and 2 million homes in rural regions.

He also stated that the construction of 2 million residences in villages each year is projected to create job opportunities in those regions.

Basuki Hadimuljono, public works and housing minister, welcomed the program as a solution to the country's housing backlog, which now stands at 12.7 million units.

Prabowo will be inaugurated as Indonesia's new president on Oct. 20 after winning the presidential election in February 2024.
