SYDNEY, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Australia's elite universities have tumbled down prestigious international rankings, according to the 2025 world university rankings published by British-based Times Higher Education (THE) on Wednesday.

The rankings downgraded the University of Melbourne, Australia's top-ranked university, from 37th-best in the world to 39th, marking the institution's worst result in the 21-year history of the rankings.

All of Australia's top-five universities fell down the rankings. Monash University slid from 54 to 58, the University of Sydney from 60 to 61 -- its worst result since 2018 -- the Australian National University from 67 to 73 and the University of Queensland from 70 to 77.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney improved from 84 to 83 but the other three universities that were in the top 150 in the 2024 rankings -- the University of Adelaide, University of Western Australia and University of Technology Sydney -- all fell.

Across Australia's top 10-ranked universities, the average THE teaching score fell from 48.2 in the 2024 rankings to 46.9.
