KABUL, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan has harvested 4.9 million tons of wheat, a 13-percent increase against the grain harvested last year, an official statement said on Sunday.

According to the statement, wheat cultivation in Afghanistan covered 2.14 million hectares of land in the Persian calendar year 1403 which started from Jan. 20, 2024, a 6 percent increase against the Persian calendar year 1402.

The war-torn Afghanistan which largely relies on foreign aid has been striving hard to overcome food insecurity by providing improved seeds and fertilizers to farmers, as well as building water reservoirs and dams to irrigate more lands.

Afghanistan reportedly imported up to 2.8 million tons of wheat flour and wheat grain from September 2022 to January 2023 to tackle food crisis.

The Afghan caretaker government is determined to change the country from wheat importer to exporter in the coming years.
