PHNOM PENH, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's imports of diesel fuel and petroleum oils surged 18 percent in the first eight months of 2024, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise on Sunday.

The value of diesel fuel and petroleum oil imports totaled 1,663 million U.S. dollars during the January-August period, up 18 percent over the same period last year.

The Southeast Asian country spent 1,006 million dollars for diesel fuel and 657 million dollars for petroleum oils in the cited period, up 16 percent and 21 percent respectively compared to the same period last year.

Cambodia currently totally relies on imports of diesel fuel and petroleum oil as its seabed's oil reserves have not been tapped yet.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy predicts that demand for oil products in Cambodia will increase to 4.8 million tons in 2030, up from 2.8 million tons in 2020.
