ULAN BATOR, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia exported 53.7 million tons of coal in the first eight months of 2024, marking a significant 31.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year, data released by the country's National Statistics Office showed Monday.

Coal remains a key export commodity for Mongolia, a country rich in natural resources. During this period, coal constituted 57.7 percent of the nation's total exports, highlighting its crucial role in the country's economy.

Initially, the Asian country set a target to export 60 million tons of coal this year. However, this forecast was revised upward to 75 million tons in August, reflecting a positive outlook on the coal sector's performance.

In 2023, the landlocked country reached a historic milestone by exporting 66.7 million tons of coal, setting a benchmark for the current year's performance.
