JAKARTA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 jolted off Indonesia's eastern Maluku province on Monday night, without generating giant waves, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The tremors occurred at 21:47 p.m Jakarta time (1447 GMT), with the epicenter being 182 km northwest of Southeast Maluku regency, with a depth of 98 km beneath the seabed, the agency said.

No tsunami warning was issued as the tremors would not trigger giant waves.

Indonesia is prone to earthquake as the archipelagic country is situated on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
