JAKARTA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Monday emphasized the importance of utilizing coconut waste to produce biofuel as part of the efforts to advance the green economy.

"I see a lot of coconut waste being processed into biofuel, which is crucial for further development," Widodo said at the 51st International Cocotech Conference and Exhibition in Surabaya, East Java, as reported by local media.

Widodo explained that this downstream process would leverage current technology to ensure that the products meet market requirements and are in high demand in various countries.

He added that Indonesia can maximize its green economy potential by developing the coconut commodity industry alongside other commodities such as vanilla, cocoa, coffee, and pepper.

With 3.8 million hectares of coconut plantations, Indonesia is the second largest producer of coconut commodities in the world, with an annual production of 2.8 million tons.
