JAKARTA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- A 5.7-magnitude earthquake jolted off Indonesia's western Bengkulu province Thursday night without generating giant waves, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The quake occurred at 22:01 Jakarta time (1501 GMT) with the epicenter situated 144 km northwest of Enggano island and a depth of 10 km under the seabed, the agency said.

The agency did not issue a tsunami warning as the tremors were not expected to trigger giant waves.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes for its position on a vulnerable quake-stricken zone called the Pacific Ring of Fire.
