5 killed, 2 injured in attack on police in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Five policemen were killed and two others injured in an attack on their vehicle in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Thursday, officials said.

The incident happened in Dera Ismail Khan district of the province at about 10:55 a.m. local time (0555 GMT) where an improvised explosive device hit the police vehicle, official sources from the province told Xinhua.

The blast was followed by firing on the policemen, who were on their routine patrolling on the election day, the sources added.

The policemen got critically wounded in the attack, and five of them succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital, the officials said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The area had been cordoned off for investigation.

In an earlier attack in Kohlu district of the country's southwest Balochistan province, four people including the brother of an independent candidate contesting general elections got injured.
