ISLAMABAD, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and 10 others injured when a suicide explosion took place inside a mosque in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, rescue teams said.

The incident happened in the Hangu district of the province where the suicide bomber blew himself up in the main hall of the mosque located in a police station, Bilal Faizi, spokesperson of state-owned Rescue 1122, told Xinhua.

"Two suicide attackers hurled hand grenades at police at the main gate of the police station, and one of them was killed at the entrance in a shootout with cops, while the other succeeded in sneaking into the mosque," Faizi said.

The roof of the mosque partially collapsed when the terrorist detonated his explosive vest upon entering, he added.

There were 30 to 40 people inside the mosque when the incident happened, and several of them got trapped under the rubbles, he said.

The rescue operation has been completed, and all stranded people were recovered and shifted to the district's military hospital, the spokesperson added.

The death toll is feared to rise, and several of the injured are in critical condition, he added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

It was the second blast that hit the South Asian country on Friday. Earlier, 50 people were killed and over 50 others injured in an explosion in southwest Balochistan province.
