"Chinese Bridge" contest highlights language knowledge quizzes, talent shows in Bangladesh

DHAKA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The final round of the 22nd "Chinese Bridge" competition for Bangladeshi college students concluded on Saturday in the Institute of Modern Language at the University of Dhaka.

The competition, themed as "One World, One Family," hosted by Confucius Institute at University of Dhaka and co-hosted by Confucius Institute at the North South University and Shanto Mariam-Honghe Confucius Classroom, featured contests of Chinese knowledge quizzes, Chinese speeches and talent shows.

During the competition, the contestants not only recounted their love for the Chinese language in their speeches but also put on a variety of talent shows to demonstrate their passion on Chinese culture including lion dance, calligraphy and traditional Chinese dance.

Zobaida Tasneem Dewan, an 18-year-old student from the Confucius Institute at the North South University, won the championship in the tense competition. The female student with the Chinese name Wang Yali will represent Bangladesh to participate in the next stage of the competition to be held in China.

"I really like Chinese culture and its people. The Chinese people are also very welcoming and warm-hearted," said Wang, adding that "I hope to become a bridge of friendship between China and Bangladesh in the future."

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen encouraged the youth of Bangladesh to continue their passion for the Chinese language and become envoys of friendship between China and Bangladesh.

It's hoped that through the "Chinese Bridge," a bridge of culture, friendship and hearts can be built between China and Bangladesh, enabling more young people to become transmitters of friendship between the two countries, the ambassador said.

"I hope this event will encourage and inspire the students to learn the Chinese language, literature and history," said Md Akhtaruzzaman, vice chancellor of the University of Dhaka.
