ISLAMABAD, May 8 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was killed in a terrorist attack in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, police said on Monday.
A group of terrorists equipped with automatic weapons opened fire at the cop when he was on his way to a check post to perform his duty in the Khyber District of the province, police sources from the district told Xinhua.
The injured policeman was shifted to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during the treatment, the sources added.
Police cordoned off the site following the attack, and a search operation is underway.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Earlier in the day, unknown miscreants attacked a police station in KP's capital city of Peshawar with hand grenades and sophisticated weapons, causing damage to the building while destroying several motorbikes parked inside the premises of the police station.
Recently, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks targeting law enforcement agencies personnel in parts of the country, especially in KP province. The banned outfit Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed many such attacks in the country. ■
