NAIROBI, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A six-day meeting convened by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UN CBD) kicked off on Monday in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, to review global progress toward the 23 targets set under the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The 28th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-28) brings together CBD delegates to evaluate strategies aimed at halting and reversing species loss by 2030.
Throughout the summit, participants will address key priorities, including marine and coastal conservation, synthetic biology, wildlife management, and protected areas, setting the groundwork ahead of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia, in October
In addition, Nairobi will host the seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation to focus on financing, resource mobilization, digital sequence information, benefit-sharing, and capacity building.
Astrid Schomaker, executive secretary of the UN CBD, noted that the Nairobi meeting is expected to inject new momentum into efforts to protect vulnerable species against the mounting threats of climate change, rapid urbanization, pollution, and unsustainable consumption.
SBSTTA Chair Jean Bruno Mikissa noted that the recommendations adopted in Nairobi will serve as a crucial bridge between scientific evidence and political action, driving efforts to revitalize the global biodiversity agenda. ■
