WINDHOEK, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The growing presence of Chinese automotive brands is reshaping Namibia's vehicle market, which recorded its strongest annual sales in 2025 since 2015 despite a late-year moderation in demand, according to a report released Friday by Simonis Storm Securities.

Vehicle sales in December 2025 remained above year-earlier levels, rising 13.8 percent year-on-year, despite a month-on-month moderation to 1,138 units after a stronger performance earlier in the year, the report showed.

Total vehicle sales for 2025 reached 14,494 units, marking the strongest annual performance since the pre-pandemic peak of 2015, the private firm said in the report, adding that fourth-quarter sales were the highest recorded since 2016.

The report also highlighted a notable structural shift in brand dynamics, with Chinese automotive brands expanding rapidly over the year. Their growth was driven by competitive pricing, contemporary vehicle designs, and improved dealership networks, which together boosted sales volumes and market share.

According to the analysis, the rising momentum of Chinese brands reflects a broader trend across southern Africa, where manufacturers are increasingly localizing supply chains and enhancing affordability.

These developments have strengthened the appeal of Chinese vehicles among both private consumers and corporate fleet buyers, particularly in the compact SUV and light commercial vehicle segments, the report said.

The report also expected a measured yet structurally constructive path for Namibia's vehicle market in 2026.

Gradual monetary easing, stable inflation, and continued business investment are likely to support demand, while the expanding role of Chinese automotive manufacturers is expected to play a central role in shaping competition, pricing, and market structure in the coming years.
