NAIROBI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese telecom giant Huawei, in collaboration with Kenya's Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), hosted a job fair Friday aimed at encouraging women and girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

The event was organized by the Women in Technology Huawei Kenya team and JKUAT under the theme of "Empowering women leaders through access to new career paths, growth opportunities, and contributions to tech innovation to drive innovation and social impact."

The fair brought together senior Huawei executives, academic faculty, students, and innovators to offer insights and opportunities to young women studying STEM courses at higher education institutions.

Maureen Mwaniki, director of Women in Technology at Huawei Kenya, highlighted the significant role women play in the ongoing digital revolution that empowers communities.

"At Huawei Kenya, we are committed to supporting women in tech through mentorship, skills development, and empowerment programs," Mwaniki said in a statement issued in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.

She emphasized that enhancing the digital skills of women and girls will foster the creation of more inclusive, innovative, and connected communities in Kenya and across Africa.

The career fair covered a wide range of topics, including career guidance, mentorship, networking opportunities, skills development, knowledge expansion, and insights into Huawei's industry impact. Attendees also explored themes like empowerment, application of technology across sectors, and continuous learning and growth.

The job fair is part of Huawei's broader commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the tech sector, addressing the gender gap in STEM fields, according to the statement.

Agnes Mindila, director of the School of Computing and Information Technology at JKUAT, underscored the importance of such career fairs in inspiring more women and girls to pursue careers in the competitive world of science and technology.
