TRIPOLI, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Sunday that it has provided sustainable access to clean water for tens of thousands of people in the eastern Libyan city of Derna by installing a solar-powered water pumping system.

"UNICEF, in partnership with Libya's General Company of Water and Wastewater, installed a solar-powered water pumping system in Derna, providing 25,300 people, including 7,590 children, with sustainable access to clean water," UNICEF said in a statement.

"The project connects five boreholes to solar energy systems, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and ensuring a continuous, eco-friendly water supply for remote areas," it added.

The project strengthens local infrastructure, promotes sustainability, and enhances long-term water security for the community, said the statement.

In September last year, the Mediterranean storm Daniel hit eastern Libya, triggering one of the country's largest and worst floods in decades. The flooding claimed the lives of thousands and destroyed facilities along its path, mostly in Derna.
