ABUJA, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria will await the outcome of an investigation on the recent murder of Nigerian citizens in Burkina Faso, said President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday.

The Nigerians were on a Muslim pilgrimage to Kaolak in Senegal when the buses conveying them were attacked, said Buhari in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian foreign ministry, through the Nigerian Embassy in Burkina Faso, is engaging with the Burkinabe authorities over the incident while awaiting its outcome.

The Nigerian government will ensure that all attackers are appropriately sanctioned, and will make every effort to bring back bodies of the deceased and the survivors of the attack, the statement added.

At least 16 Nigerians were killed in that attack, according to media reports, citing a statement of the religious group to which the deceased belonged.

A statement from Burkina Faso's Foreign Affairs Minister Olivia Rouamba on Monday said investigations are underway to elucidate the allegations of the killings of Nigerian civilians.

"For the moment, there is no concrete information or element picked up on the field that proves the veracity of these facts," Rouamba said, adding Burkina Faso welcomes any contribution from Nigeria in the investigations.
