ABUJA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 19 extremist militants were killed in anti-terror operations by troops in Nigeria's northeast region in the past two weeks, an official said on Thursday.

Musa Danmadami, the spokesman for the military, told reporters at a press briefing in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, that airstrikes by troops targeted enclaves of the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militant groups in Kolaram and Bukar Meram, two towns in the northern state of Borno.

The airstrikes resulted in the killing of the 19 militants, Danmadami said, adding others fled in disarray.

The military official said 14 abducted civilians held in the militants' camps were rescued during the military operations.

At least 79 extremist militants were also nabbed and more than 400 militants and their families surrendered to the troops during the period, Danmadami said. They are being profiled for further action, according to him.

The ISWAP has been collaborating with its sister group Boko Haram to establish an Islamist state in northeast Nigeria. The terror groups have also extended their attacks to other countries in the Lake Chad Basin.
