YANGON, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's century-old Wazira Cinema has officially reopened as an international-standard red-carpet theater in Yangon after a major renovation to preserve its cultural and architectural heritage, the state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Tuesday.
The reopening ceremony of the 103-year-old landmark in Kyauktada township of Yangon was attended by Myanmar's President U Min Aung Hlaing, Union ministers, government officials, cultural attachés from foreign embassies, representatives of local and international organizations and artistes, the report said.
The building was originally constructed in 1923 as the Excelsior Theater by the Madan Theater Company. During the Japanese occupation, it was renamed Yangon Cinema. After World War II, it became A-1 Cinema before officially taking the name Wazira Cinema in 1969, it said.
The name "Wazira" comes from the Pali word "Vajira," meaning something as precious and strong as a diamond. The theater is known for its Beaux-Arts architecture, featuring grand Ionic columns, detailed decoration and elegant European-inspired designs, according to the report.
Speaking at the ceremony, President U Min Aung Hlaing said the renovated theater will serve as a national cultural center where Myanmar's traditional arts, films, theater, music and other performances can be presented to both local audiences and international visitors.
The upgraded theater combines its historic architecture with modern facilities, including new cinema seats, LED display screens and advanced sound technology. It is expected to host film festivals, traditional performances, heritage exhibitions and other cultural events, the report said. ■
