KABUL, July 28 (Xinhua) -- One child was killed and another injured after unexploded ordnance detonated in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province on Tuesday, a statement from the provincial government said.

The children were taking their animals to a pasture outside the provincial capital, Jalalabad, when they found a toy-like object and began playing with it. The device exploded, killing a ten-year-old boy on the spot and injuring a nine-year-old child, the statement added.

Afghanistan is reportedly among the world's most mine-contaminated countries. Unexploded ordnance left over from more than four decades of conflict kills or maims more than a dozen people every month. Most victims are civilians, including many children.
