MADRID, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Real Mallorca has named Luis Garcia as its new head coach as the club looks to secure an immediate return to La Liga.
The 45-year-old has signed a one-year contract with an option for a second season, replacing Martin Demichelis, who had initially agreed to remain in charge after Mallorca's relegation from Spain's top flight before leaving to take over at RB Leipzig.
Luis Garcia began his coaching career in Real Madrid's youth system before moving to Espanyol, one of his former clubs as a player. He later had a brief five-match spell in charge of the Qatar national team.
He spent last season with Las Palmas, guiding the club to fifth place in the second division before losing to Malaga in the promotion playoffs. Malaga secured promotion to La Liga after defeating Almeria on Saturday. ■
