KABUL, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police have destroyed around 1,000 acres of poppy fields in Samangan province, north of Afghanistan, over the past two days in a drive against illegal crops and illicit drugs, provincial police spokesman Hashmatullah Rahmani said Monday.
During the counter-narcotics operations, which commenced recently in Dara-i-Suf Payen district and covered several villages, around 1,000 acres of land have been cleansed of poppy since the weekend, the official said.
The official added that stern action will be taken against anyone who produces or traffics illegal drugs.
Police have earlier reported the destruction of hundreds of acres of poppy farms in Baghlan, Takhar and Badakhshan provinces over the past couple of weeks. ■
