LONDON, May 24 (Xinhua) -- West Ham was relegated to the Championship on the last day of the Premier League season on Sunday while Tottenham survived on a tense final afternoon.
Although West Ham beat Leeds United 3-0 in the London Stadium, with goals from Valentin Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson, the old adage that if your fate doesn't lie in your own hands, things don't end well, was proved to be true once again.
Tottenham knew a win at home to Everton would assure survival and Joao Palhinha's 43rd minute goal was enough to decide a game where an Everton with nothing to play for never looked like doing West Ham a favor.
Newly crowned Europa League champion, Aston Villa spoiled Pep Guardiola's last game in charge of Manchester City as two second half goals from England striker Ollie Watkins overturned Antoine Semenyo's first half opener for Manchester City.
That win and Liverpool's disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Brentford had a knock-on effect for the European places, because Aston Villa's fourth place finish means the Premier League only has five places in next season's Champions League, opposed to the six it would have had if Unai Emery's side had finished fifth.
Curtis Jones scored for Liverpool with Mohamed Salah giving the assist on his last game for the club, but Kevin Schade saved a point for Brentford.
Bournemouth finishes sixth in the table, with a 1-1 draw away to Nottingham Forest. Morgan Gibbs-White put the home side ahead before Marcus Tavernier levelled for Andoni Iraola's side, who nevertheless have to settle for a place in the Europa League.
Sunderland takes the second Europa League spot thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Chelsea that sees it finish in seventh place in its first season back in the Premier.
Trai Hume put Sunderland ahead on the 25th minute and an own goal from Malo Gusto doubled the lead in the 50th minute. Cole Palmer got Chelsea into the game in the 56th minute but Wesley Fofana's red card ended Chelsea's fightback hopes and the team from south-London misses out on a place in Europe next season.
Brighton has to settle for the Conference League after Michael Carrick was able to celebrate his permanent contract as Manchester United coach with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Patrick Dorgu, Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes.
Fulham ended the season with a 2-0 win at home to Newcastle, while Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers drew 1-1 which meant Wolverhampton finished bottom of the table.
Finally, Arsenal celebrated its title with a 2-1 win away to Crystal Palace who will take a place in the Europa League if it beats Rayo Vallecano in next week's Conference League final. ■
