AMMAN, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Jordan and Venezuela signed four cooperation agreements on Sunday during the first visit by a Venezuelan foreign minister to the kingdom since the establishment of diplomatic relations more than seven decades ago.

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his Venezuelan counterpart, Yvan Gil, held talks in the capital Amman, focusing on expanding cooperation in agriculture, energy, investment, tourism, and information technology.

The two diplomats signed agreements and memorandums of understanding to establish a joint bilateral committee, launch a political consultation mechanism, and enhance agricultural cooperation and diplomatic training. They also agreed to expedite future pacts on investment protection, double taxation avoidance, and visa exemptions.

At a joint press conference, Safadi said that discussions also addressed de-escalating tensions in the Middle East and restoring stability. He commended Venezuela's support for the two-state solution.

Gil, who conveyed a message from Venezuelan acting president Delcy Rodriguez congratulating Jordan on its 80th Independence Day, said that Venezuela could serve as Jordan's gateway to South America and the Caribbean. He noted the economic complementarity between the two nations and expressed eagerness to attract Jordanian technological expertise and businesses to the Venezuelan market.

The meeting follows Safadi's trip to Caracas in February, the first by a Jordanian foreign minister to Venezuela.
