ATHENS, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Olympiacos Piraeus beat Real Madrid 92-85 to win the 2026 EuroLeague title here on Sunday, claiming the European crown for the fourth time after 13 years.
In front of a home crowd at the Telekom Center Athens, the Greek team from the port of Piraeus overcame its long-time rival in the championship game of the EuroLeague Final Four, which was held in the Greek capital for the first time in 19 years.
The Greek side entered the game in strong form, taking a slender 46-44 lead into the halftime break.
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter, but the Reds outscored Los Blancos in the final minutes.
Evan Fournier topped the scoring for Olympiacos with 20 points, followed by Alec Peters with 16. Sasha Vezenkov scored 12 points and Thomas Walkup added 10.
Real Madrid's Trey Lyles led the way with 24 points, while Mario Hezonja contributed 19 points and Andres Feliz added 13.
Olympiacos' victory sparked celebrations among home supporters as the trophy returned to Greece.
Olympiacos reached the final after defeating Türkiye's Fenerbahce in Friday's semifinal, while Real Madrid advanced by defeating Valencia Basket.
Sunday's final marked the fifth meeting between Olympiacos and Real Madrid in a EuroLeague championship game (1995, 2013, 2015 and 2023). Real Madrid had won three of the previous four encounters.
Olympiacos had previously defeated the Spanish giants in the 2013 final in London. ■
