RIO DE JANEIRO, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Botafogo is close to appointing Portugal's Franclim Carvalho as its new head coach, according to widespread media reports in Brazil.
Carvalho is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday to sign a contract that runs until December 2027, newspaper O Globo said on Wednesday.
The 39-year-old is well known to Botafogo, having worked as an assistant coach to Artur Jorge in 2024, when the Rio de Janeiro club won both the Copa Libertadores and Brazilian Serie A titles.
Carvalho's only experience as a first-team manager was with the now-defunct Portuguese side Belenses SAD in 2022.
Botafogo has been searching for a new head coach since parting ways with Argentine Martin Anselmi in March.
The three-time Brazilian top-flight champion has endured a difficult start to the South American season, having failed to progress beyond the Copa Libertadores qualifying phase and losing five of its first seven Brazilian Serie A matches. ■
