MADRID, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Celta Vigo coach Claudio Giraldez has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of June 2028.
The new contract is a reward for Giraldez's excellent work over the past two seasons, during which he has taken Celta from the brink of relegation to the Spanish second division to a place in this season's Europa League and a chance of playing in next season's Champions League.
Giraldez was promoted from Celta's B team to replace Rafael Benitez in March 2024, with the club struggling to avoid relegation.
He guided the team to safety, and last season Celta finished seventh in La Liga to qualify for the Europa League, where it is due to face SC Freiburg in this season's quarterfinals.
Celta is currently sixth in the league table, just three points behind Betis.
The results achieved by his side and its exciting attacking football have made the 38-year-old coach a target for other clubs in Spain and Europe, but Giraldez has decided to remain loyal to the club where he began working in the youth system 10 years ago. ■
