VALLETTA, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Malta on Tuesday signed a contract for the manufacture and installation of a second subsea electricity cable between Malta and Sicily, further strengthening its connection to the European energy grid.
The second interconnector project, with a total value of around 300 million euros (342 million U.S. dollars) is a co-financed project by the European Union (EU).
Presiding over the signing ceremony, Maltese Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said the project will enhance the electricity network and facilitate the transition towards a carbon-neutral economy.
Dalli said that doubling Malta's current connection to the European network was expected to help stabilize the energy system and facilitate greater investment in renewable energy. ■
