COLOMBO, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will conduct a survey in 2025 to assess the current status of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country, said an official on Tuesday.
Director of the Non-Communicable Disease Unit at the Ministry of Health Samiddhi Samarakoon told the media that the ministry will place special focus on the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and related trends.
Samarakoon added that the information gathered through the survey will be extremely valuable in setting new health targets and refining future health services.
In Sri Lanka, NCDs have become a leading cause of illness and death, posing a significant threat to the overall well-being and development of the nation.
The Ministry of Health reported earlier that approximately 83 percent of all deaths per year in Sri Lanka are caused by NCDs. ■
