TRIPOLI, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan Interior Ministry on Wednesday announced the destruction of two tons of explosive war remnants in the Al-Hira area, south of the capital Tripoli.
"As part of its ongoing efforts to protect lives and property, the Security Inspection and Explosives Disposal Department of the Western Mountain Branch, in cooperation with the Technical Affairs Section of the Criminal Investigation Department, destroyed an estimated 2 tons of war remnants," the ministry said in a statement.
"The war remnants were recovered from several locations in the Western Mountain region over the past few months, as part of the Department's ongoing efforts to secure the area and remove war remnants," it added.
The Libyan Forensic Police in February also destroyed 2 tons of war remnants in the Al-Hira area, recovered from different parts of Tripoli.
Following the 2011 uprising that toppled the late leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been plagued by insecurity and armed conflict.
According to official data, more than 444 million square meters are still contaminated with mines and war remnants throughout Libya. ■
