SYDNEY, April 14 (Xinhua) -- A mysterious neurological condition causing paralysis in Australian magpies is under investigation by researchers at Murdoch University recently.

The syndrome, which has affected magpies across Perth and the southwest since 2018, is now spreading more rapidly, prompting concern among scientists and wildlife carers.

According to Bethany Jackson from Murdoch University's Harry Butler Institute, afflicted birds exhibit symptoms ranging from weakness and impaired coordination to, in severe cases, the inability to lift their heads or breathe.

While some early cases were suspected to be caused by botulism, the current outbreak displays atypical characteristics, Jackson said, adding they were working closely with wildlife centers, veterinarians, and Wildlife Health Australia to gather data and conduct a range of diagnostic tests.

The research spans from microscopic analysis of tissues and cells to broader data collection, as researchers piece together clues to identify the cause of this condition, she said.

The exact cause remains unknown, underscoring the complexities of diagnosing novel wildlife diseases and the challenges posed by limited resources and high diagnostic costs.

Jackson urged the public to report sightings of affected magpies to local wildlife authorities or veterinarians, to support ongoing efforts to understand and contain the outbreak.
