MEXICO CITY, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Mexico should adopt strategic measures to strengthen infrastructure and develop technological capabilities to make it more resilient and competitive amid U.S. protectionist trade policies, the International Chamber of Commerce Mexico said Tuesday.
The U.S. government's recent decision to impose "reciprocal tariffs" on goods from more than 180 countries and regions has reshaped the global trade environment, the private-sector organization said in a press release.
Thanks to the free trade agreement for the North American region, Mexico has managed to maintain privileged access to the U.S. market, but it is not exempt from global risks and needs to address structural challenges through public-private cooperation, it said.
"We believe that Mexico has all the potential to be an export powerhouse based on innovation, sustainability, and added value," said the trade body.
It urged Mexico to improve its logistics and energy infrastructure, invest in science, technology and innovation, strengthen the rule of law and the regulatory environment, and diversify its markets.
The future of global trade will be determined by a country's ability to develop and apply cutting-edge technologies, so Mexico needs to invest decisively in research, talent and digitalization to avoid being left behind in value chains, it said. ■
